Hello Summer!!!! (MONDAY - JUNE 15, 2020)

Dear Newfield Students & Families,

YOU DID IT!!!! You completed distance learning in P.E. & Health! We know this was MUCH different than anything you (or we!) were ever used to ever doing before! We never would have thought that when we went home that afternoon on March 12th, that we wouldn't have been back to see each other again this school year. Many of you stepped out of your comfort zone, and tried new and exciting activities that you probably never would have tried if we hadn't been in distance learning. Needless to say, you ROCKED it, and we couldn't be more proud of each and every one of you who participated with us!

Please use all of the activities over the past 12 weeks from the Newfield Health & P.E. Blog to keep active over the summer months! We encourage you to try something new everyday! Remember, your goal is get your heart-rate up, and participate in at least 60-minutes of physical activity every day.

You can always find the Newfield P.E. & Health Blog at:

http://newfieldschoolpe.blogspot.com/

We are also sharing with you the link below to explore. This link is from Open PhysEd (the same source used for our Virtual Field Day format). They are offering a FREE At-Home Summer Camp! We wish you and your families continued health and lots of FUN over the summer! We can't wait to be all together again at school soon!!

Keep moving,
Mrs. Spinner & Mrs. Iacono

Health Lesson: K-5
GO...SLOW...WHOA!

Since we are all spending a lot of time in our homes, it's important that we are aware of the foods and drinks we are putting into our bodies each and everyday. We learned in last week's Health lesson about the Five Food Groups and Portion Sizes, and why it's so important to know how each food group (in the right quantities) fuels your body!

Watch this short video from Ilaria St. Florian, MS, RD. Miss Ilaria is the Manager of the KIDS' FANS nutrition program that is offered to our 3rd graders each year at all of the Stamford Public Schools. She is graciously offering additional health lessons in the form of short videos to all of our students during our Distance Learning time. This video is all about foods/drinks that are healthy and come from the Earth ("GO" foods). foods/drinks that are slightly modified from their original form ("SLOW" foods), and foods/drinks that are not so healthy and should be eaten and enjoyed in moderation ("WHOA" foods). Listen to this neat video and learn more about how the foods you choose and their portion sizes are so important for lifelong health and establishing good eating habits.

Remember to log your activities into your Weekly P.E. Activity & Health Log and submit it to Mrs. Spinner and Mrs. Iacono no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday!

Grades K, 1 & 2
MINUTE TO WIN IT - KIDS IN MOTION CHALLENGE
Check out this cool video! For every fitness challenge you complete, earn points. How many points can you get?

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

GRADES 3, 4 & 5:
HEALTHWORKS! YOUTH FITNESS 301 - CORE EXERCISE CHALLENGE
Did you enjoy last week's core challenge? If so, give this one a try! A big focus of our lessons this year in P.E. has been focused on building core stamina. Here's a short (yet challenging!) core workout to help you to continue to build upon and increase your strength.

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

GRADES 3, 4 & 5:
HEALTHWORKS! YOUTH FITNESS 301 - CARDIO CHALLENGE
If you still have energy left after the core workout, give this one cardiovascular (remember cardiovascular means "heart") workout a try! Just like we have practiced at school, remember to keep your back straight when you do squats (like you are sitting down in an invisible chair).

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Grades 3, 4 & 5:
SCAVENGER HUNT FITNESS QUEST
Take this challenge. You have several round of 30-second intervals to speedwalk (no running!) around your home and touch as many things as you can. Each time you touch an item, give yourself a point. If you aren't back before time is up, you don't get any points for that round. In between each round, see if you can answer the health trivia questions. How many points can you score in this challenge?

*Do not click to subscribe to any YouTube channels without permission from a grown-up in your home.

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

(Source: Mike Ginicola - Physical Education Teacher in Stratford, CT)

Grades 3, 4 & 5:
LINE JUMP WORKOUT FOR KIDS
When we were last together at Newfield, we were working on jumping skills in P.E. class. Do you remember the cues (or tips) for jumping?

  • Feet together
  • Low jumps, landing on the balls of your feet (right under your toes)
  • Straight body (like a lollopop!)
  • Land softly (like you're landing on a cloud - no elephant landings!)

Remembering and using the jumping cues above, try this Line Jump Workout on your own or with someone living in your home.

*Do not place any tape on your floors. It can damage or even ruin the floors and carpets in your home!

*Do not click to subscribe to any YouTube channels without permission from a grown-up in your home.

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

HEALTH LESSON: Grades K, 1 & 2:
STRANGER DANGER
Who is a stranger? A stranger is anybody who you do not know. Even if a stranger calls you by your name, or says they know you or your grown-up - if you do not know the person, then that person is a stranger. So, what do you do if a stranger approaches you? Watch this cool music video from The Learning Station and find out!

HEALTH LESSON: Grades K-5:
HEALTHY & NOT-SO-HEALTHY FATS
Since we are all spending a lot of time in our homes, it's important that we are aware of the foods and drinks we are putting into our bodies each and everyday. We learned in last week's Health lesson about Healthy Snacking, and why it's so important to think about the foods and drinks we fuel our bodies with each day. Just like a car needs gasoline to go the distance, our bodies need to be fueled with nutritious foods and beverages so that we can be at our best all day long!

In this video, you will learn about healthy and not-so-healthy fats. Did you know there are fats that are healthy? There are some fats that are good for your body! Listen to this neat video and learn how you can differentiate between the healthy and the not-so-healthy fats!

Remember to log your activities and minutes into your Weekly P.E. Activity & Health Log and submit it to Mrs. Spinner and Mrs. Iacono no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday!

Click on here: Weekly Activity Log

Week 9: P.E. & Health Activities (May 18th thru May 22nd)

Hi Newfield Students & Families,

In addition to what we already sent home, and the activities previously posted on this P.E. Blog, here are some workouts to help you to get in your "moving minutes." Remember to e-mail us with any questions or modifications you may need. We are here to help you!

K-5:
WARM-UP!
We all know how important a warm-up routine is before we exercise. In P.E. class, we always start our class with stretching and jogging. It helps to warm our muscles up, so we don't get hurt. Although we sent everyone home on March 12th with lots of warm-up routines, we want to be sure you are still incorporating them weekly into your fitness regimen. Take a look at the slides below. This warm-up routine you do at school should also be one you do at home before any activities you try!

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Grades K & 1:
CHICKEN DANCE WITH MICKEY MOUSE
Do you like Mickey Mouse? If so, this is the dance challenge for you! Come join in for a SUPER SILLY and magical new version of an old favorite, "The Chicken Dance." Can you keep up!? Shake! Shake! Shake!

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

(Source: Keith Hanson, Physical Education Teacher in California)

Grades K, 1 & 2
FREEZE DANCE - PART 3
Back by popular demand ....it's time for Freeze Dance - Part 3. This one might be the BEST one yet! The costumes, the music and the moves in this dance video are so awesome, that you might just want to invite your grown-up to dance along with you!

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

(Source: Keith Hanson, Physical Education Teacher in California)

Grades K, 1 & 2:
PILLOW FLIPPER CHALLENGE
Can you really exercise with a pillow? Absolutely!! Check out this neat video and find out how! Feel free to substitute the jumping jacks for another movement activity you enjoy (i.e.: frog jumps, fire feet, mountain climbers, side-to-side jumps, pretend jump roping, Floss Dancing, etc). After you finish your 1-minute challenge, place your hand over your heart and see if it feels like it's beating faster? If it is, you completed a really good cardiovascular (another word for heart workout!)

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

(Source: Mike Morris, Open PhysEd)

Grades K, 1 & 2:
WADDLE RACES CHALLENGE
Find some good personal space in your home to get started. For this fitness challenge, you will need a pair of rolled up socks, 2 laundry baskets (straw baskets, buckets, plastic bowls pots/pans will work, too ...just ask a grown-up for permission before choosing your items). How well can you squeeze a sock-ball between your knees and waddle to a finish line and back? Drop the sock-ball into your basket each trip. Repeat. You have 1 minute. On your mark ... get set ... GO!!!!!!! What happens if you change the sock-ball to a smaller or larger size? Is it easier or harder? Give it a try!

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Grades K, 1 & 2
CJ "THE WORKOUT KID" CHALLENGE
Have you ever pretended to play "teacher" or "coach" at home? Well, this kid has! Meet CJ. He's 10 years-old, and he has designed a workout routine just for YOU! Exercise alongside CJ as he motivates and moves you ...and makes you sweat!

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

(Source: CJ The Workout Kid)

Grades 3, 4 & 5:
MINUTE 2 WIN IT CARDIO CHALLENGE
Join in the fun for a fitness version of a family favorite game of Minute 2 Win It! We talk about cardiovascular ("heart") exercises all of the time in P.E. class. Our goal every single P.E. class is to always get your heart rate up. Working out at home should be no different. Try this challenge at home. You will need some good personal space, 2 chairs (about 16 feet apart), a writing utensil, and two pieces of paper. The score to beat is "48." Can you beat the teacher in the video? Set up the game and find out! Remember to take your heart rate after each round of this challenge. Is your heart rate over 100 bpm (beats per minute)? If so, you just had a good cardio workout! Try this challenge by yourself or versus another member of your family who is living in your home.

Variation: You're completed the challenge one way, but can you do another? Can you side-slide and get into defensive position (like a basketball player), and still complete this challenge? Get down low. Don't let your feet cross as you move side-to-side!

*Be sure to ask your grown-up for permission before setting up and performing this challenge.

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Grades 3, 4 & 5:
11 MINUTE PILLOW ABS CHALLENGE
THE ULTIMATE CORE WORKOUT!!!

FOOT TRAP SOCCER CHALLENGE
Who needs a soccer field to play soccer? You can play right in your own hallway at your home! Make sure you have some good personal space, and set up this Foot Trap Soccer Challenge. All you will need is a rolled up pair of sock to make a sock-ball and two flat books. Use the insides of your feet and dribble the sock-ball to the book across from you. Trap it on the book. Turn around and do the same thing in the other direction. Each time you trap the sock-ball on a book, give yourself a point. How many points can you get in 1 minute? Ready ... Set ... GO!!!!!! What happens if you change the sock-ball to a smaller or larger size? Is it easier or harder? Give it a try!

HEALTH LESSON: Grades K-5:
HEALTHY SNACKING

Since we are all spending a lot of time in our homes, it's important that we are aware of the foods and drinks we are putting into our bodies each and everyday. We learned in last week's Health lesson about Fiber, and why it's so important that we include 25 grams of fiber into our diet each day.

This video is all about Healthy Snacking. Listen to this neat video and learn about how to choose snacks that will help empower your mind and body!
