Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.
GRADES 3, 4 & 5:
GHOSTBUSTERS FITNESS CHALLENGE
Can you complete this fitness challenge? Begin by taking your resting heart rate. Remember, to find your pulse, use your first two fingers (index and middle finger together), and place them on the side of your neck - in that groove between your ear and your chin). If you are having difficulty finding your pulse, slowly and gently turn your head in the same direction as those two fingerpads which are resting on your neck. Set a timer for 6 seconds (or have someone in your home time you for 6 seconds). Count the beats you feel under your fingerpads in your head for those 6 seconds and then stop. Multiply whatever number you get by "10" (or the easy trick is to just add a "0" to whatever number you get. For example, if you felt "7" beats, your resting pulse would be "70." Keep your resting heart rate number in your head. Then, follow along with the video, and follow these instructions:
  • When the music starts, begin doing jumping jacks or running in place.
  • When you hear the word "Ghostbusters," complete 1 burpee.
  • Then, continue doing jumping jacks or running in place.
  • Repeat!
Could you keep up!?? Immediately upon completing the challenge, take your heart rate again. What do you notice? Did it go up or down? If your heart rate went up, that means you had a really good cardiovascular (heart) workout! Remember, when you are working out, you should be getting your exercising heart rate to 100 beats per minute or more.

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Grades K-5:
FITNESS BINGO
Did someone say B-I-N-G-O!?? See how many different ways YOU can get BINGO in this fun game! Try a different way to win BINGO for each day of the week!

*Students in Grades K, 1 & 2: Change the "Burpees" exercise to "Frog Jumps." If the number next to each exercise is too hard to do, only do half as many.

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

HEALTH LESSON - K-5:
The importance of keeping a schedule and eating a healthy breakfast everyday...

Since we are all spending a lot of time in our homes, it's essential that we stay on a schedule with our schoolwork AND our meals! It's so important that you start with nutritious breakfast right at the start of your day!

Watch this short video from Ilaria St. Florian, MS, RD. Ilaria is affiliated with Stamford Hospital, and is the Manager of the KIDS' FANS nutrition program which is offered to our 3rd graders each year. She is graciously offering additional health lessons in the form of short videos to all of our students during our Distance Learning time.

Week 5 P.E. & Health Activities (April 20th thru April 24th)

Hi Newfield Students & Families,

In addition to what we already sent home, and the activities previously posted on this P.E. Blog, here are some workouts to help you to get in your "moving minutes." Remember to e-mail us with any questions or modifications you may need. We are here to help you!

Grades K-5:
RECYCLED BOWLING
Bowling alleys may be closed right now, but did you know you can make one right in your own home? Ask a grown-up living in your home a safe place to set-up and play. Also, be sure to get their permission to play with the recycled items you collect before playing.

*Remember: NO glass objects should be used in your bowling game because glass is NOT safe!

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Grades K, 1 & 2 (older grades can try this one, too!):
BACKYARD (OR  STATIONARY) FITNESS CHALLENGE
Hi everyone! Here is a fun activity to try in your backyard or in some good personal space in your home. You can try it with a person living in your home, too! If you don't have space outside on your property to run (or if it's a bad weather day), you can do this activity indoors by running-in-place as well. *Remember: You should NOT be going to any public space to do your workouts (parks are closed!)

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Grades K, 1, 2 & 3:
LEARN HOW TO FLOSS!
Do you know how to do the F-L-O-S-S? Follow these steps and perfect your dance move!

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Grades K-5:
BOTTLE FLIPPING BURPEE CHALLENGE
Hey Newfield! We know you LOVE bottle flipping ..so give this activity a try! What's your personal best? Challenge other people living within your home, and see who can get the highest record of "flips!"

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

Grades K-2: Replace burpees with frog jumps, if needed.

Remember: For safety, ONLY use plastic bottles and be sure they are tightly sealed. NEVER use glass.

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

(A special thank you to Colby Coulter, Physical Education teacher at Pelion Elementary School in Pelion, South Carolina for sharing this activity with us here at Newfield).

Grades 3, 4 & 5:
PAPER BALL CHALLENGE
Here's a really fun challenge to try. Crumple up a piece of blank paper in your home, and try these THREE different challenges. Try the first one by yourself. What's your personal best? Try by using both hands. Try again only using your dominant hand? How about using only your non-dominant hand? Try the last two challenges with someone living in your home. How well can you work together to achieve a high score? Can you add an implement (like the toy action figures or something else) and strike the paper ball with something - and still have success? Try different safe household items (ask your grown-up which implements are safe before trying it). Challenge yourself and add a third person living in your home into the game. Whoa! This is much harder than it looks!

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

(A special thank you to Colby Coulter, Physical Education teacher at Pelion Elementary School in Pelion, South Carolina for sharing this activity with us here at Newfield).

Grades K-5:
TWO-PERSON PARACHUTE CHALLENGE
How about this one? Grab an old blanket or beach towel. You will need a partner for this activity, so see if someone living in your home wants to play this game with you. Check with your grown-up where a safe place in or on your property is to play. Try small tosses with your parachute first. Was it easy? Can you still do it when you toss the item up higher? Are certain items easier to toss and catch than others? Why? If you have multiple people who live with you in your home, make and switch up the teams and see who can rack up the best score together!

Make sure you ask your grown-up if the items you have chosen to use are safe BEFORE playing this game!

Be sure to have your water bottle handy! Listen to your body and take breaks and drink water when you need it.

(A special thank you to Colby Coulter, Physical Education teacher at Pelion Elementary School in Pelion, South Carolina for sharing this activity with us here at Newfield).

K-5: HEALTH LESSON/EXPERIMENT

We have already learned how important it is to wash our hands with soap and water to get rid of those pesky germs! Check out this cool video on how to make SUPERPOWERED SOAP!!

If you are going to try to make this at home, please make sure that you have the permission from your grown-up first! To be safe, you will also need their help with part of the experiment - particularly the part where water needs to be brought to a boil. Should you choose to try this health experiment at home, your grown-up should be assisting you and overseeing everything that you are doing.

Remember to log your activities and minutes into your Weekly P.E. Activity & Health Log and submit it to Mrs. Spinner and Mrs. Iacono no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday!

Health Lesson: Grades K-5
"Bike Smart, Ride Safe!"
With warmer weather on its way, bike riding is a great way to get some fresh air, while also keeping physically active. It's especially important during this time to ask your grown-up when and where it is safe for you to ride your bike. It's important that we are all practicing good social distancing (that means only riding and hanging out with family members who live within your own home). Even if you aren't able to ride your bike right now, it's really important that you know how to keep yourself safe for a later time when you do go out for a ride.

Do you know how to be safe while riding your bike? Did you ever hear about the EYES-EARS-MOUTH rule? Watch the short video below, and learn all about bike safety! (The same safety rules apply if you are riding a scooter or skateboard, too!)

*There will be a section about bicycle safety (based on this video) on this week's P.E. & Health Activity Log. Be sure to pay good attention to the safety rules!

Remember to log your activities and minutes into your Weekly P.E. Activity & Health Log - which is posted in the blog above for Week 4 (April 13th thru April 17th). Please be sure your P.E. Activity & Health Log is submitted by Friday, April 3rd at 3:00 p.m.
